ABOUT

When we weave, we let our emotion drive our creative process; breathing through our hands in each woven detail. To lean inwards and express our inner dialogue through fibre, has helped us grow spiritually and together as sisters.

Crossing Threads® is the collaborative work of Lauren and Kass Hernandez, Australian-born sisters of Filipino heritage living and working on Wangal and Gadigal Land.

Known for their large-scale and highly textural handwoven pieces, the Hernandez sisters seek to emulate the natural forms found in Mother Nature. Their carefully curated fibre selections include Australian Merino wool, plant-based fibres, up-cycled/dead-stock fabrics, and other foraged items not typically used in traditional fibre art. Their practice has led them to develop their recognisable ‘interknot’ technique, made up of intertwining hand-knotted chains of varying texture and thickness, which graduate to a relief. The artists draw inspiration from their surrounding landscapes, familial relationships, and personal experiences woven into their abstract designs. Through extensive experimentation fuelled by curiosity, passion, and collaboration, Crossing Threads® has had the opportunity to share its art with many collectors worldwide.

Their work has been featured by The Design Files, SBS, Est Living, Elle Decoration UK, The Woolmark Company, Inside Out Magazine and exhibited at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Gallery 76 Queen Street, The Australian Design Centre and Fairfield City Museum & Gallery.

Crossing Threads® aims to inspire, evoke emotion and cultivate authentic connection. Each new day brings the opportunity to ‘weave’ your reality - whatever it may be. As lives interconnect with others, each relationship forms a unique thread that makes up the tapestry of life. Sisters Lauren and Kass explore the internal and external tapestries they possess. Their artworks are woven embodiments of this; tactile stories with fibre being their chosen medium.
